Mammography

  • Mammography:
    • Bilateral, comparative examination
    • Low-dose film/screen technique that delivers as little as 0,1 cGy per study
    • Rarely efficient before 30 y
    • Because of screening programs 10-15% of mammography detected breast cancers can not be detected clinically.

  • Sensibility and specificity:
    • Sensibility and specificity that exceeds 90%
    • Low specificity (25%) in patients whose breast cancer can not be detected clinically
    • Accuracy significantly greater than clinical examination for detection of occult or early tumors.

  • Image suggestive of malignancy:
    • Spiculated or irregular margins
    • Fine, stippled calcium or calcification of the lesion
    • Architectural distortions, duct dilatation, asymmetry and fibronodular densities
    • Accuracy significantly greater than clinical examination for detection of occult or early tumors.
