Ultrasonography

  • The resolution of ultrasound is inferior to high-resolution mammography
  • Lesions under 1 cm in diameter, unless cystic, cannot be detected
  • Not useful for stereotactic localization of nonpalpable breast lesions
  • Doppler flow signals can be used to detect increased flow and continuous flow through diastole in malignant breast lesions -not adequate sensitivity to dictate treatment
  • Before 30 y supports the clinical impression of a simple cyst or fibroadenoma
  • After 30 y is indicated only when confirmation of a mammographic impression of a simple cyst is needed
  • PET scan and MRI - under evaluation.
